My musical experience was formed listening to the music of my older sister who is 5 years older than me and I just turned 69. She was into the Doors, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, Its as Beautiful Day, Quicksilver MS, Dylan, Beatles, etc, etc. Once I came of age, my little surf crew developed our own musical interests, definitely influenced by the West coast California surf scene of the early 70s.
I’ve always loved free form radio, starting in LA with KPPC and KNAC and later on KTYD in Santa Barbara. When I moved to Maui in 1980, KAOI 91.5 was as close to free form as you could get, but with commercials. Bill Best was the man behind the Mic in those early days and was truly the “best”…..! But as the years went by, it became more commercial, (and to some extent programmed), and the quality of the music suffered. I’ve been listening to Mana’o radio since the station began in 2002, and loved the format and variety that was played. But, as I got older and the music got youNot saying that the newer music isn’t great, (it was and continues to be), but it didn’t really land inside me. So, I’ve always wanted to have a show, but just never pursued it until this year. Luckily, Linda had an opening, so the Rear View Mirror Show was launched! I love hearing from folks that really relate to the music of that era. And, selfishly, I relish in the opportunity to just choose the song, crank it up, listen and rock out by myself in the studio, !nger, I yearned for the kind of music that was from my life’s playlist!
The Rear View Mirror is my first experience behind the Mic anywhere, so it’s a work in progress. My format is somewhat simple and straightforward, I’m un-apologetically focused on the music of the 60s and 70s, but not solely limited to those years. I will expand selectively even up to the present if the music works for me, and hopefully the listeners.
