” We found you in our rental car at 5 am last Thursday morning heading up to catch sunrise on Haleakala.  It really got us going, song after song blowing us away—Red Molly, Leadbelly, Afro-beat, Mingus, Chuck Brown—more women than usual too—Norah Jones?   Many we could only guess at. Within 24 hours of being home, we’d both looked  you up online. And I promise—I’ve never fallen in love with a radio station before.

Best wishes to you—best music we’ve ever heard over genre after genre”

-Louisa Davis, an island visitor from Reston, Virginia

Up Country Sundays 7-3-15 Les Fest

Aloha Friends and Family,
There will be a Celebration of Life and Musical Tribute to Les on July 5, at Casanova in Makawao, from 2:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon. I hope you can be there. Donations to help with his medical and funeral expenses will be gratefully accepted but are not required. Your presence in tribute to his greatness of soul is the most important thing.
Many of Maui’s greatest musicians will be there to do him honor: Middlejohn, Steve Grimes, Hutch Hutchinson, Eddie Tanaka, Vince Esquire, Tom Conway, Gail Swanson, Justin Morris, Matt Del Olmo, Angela Benoit, Sal Godinez, Dickie Tilton, Don Lopez, Alana Cini, Greg DiPiazza, John Pollock, and others as yet to be confirmed. We will be setting up Les’ piano and inviting some of his favorite pianists to play on it in his honor.
Hopefully I will see you on July 5th. If you are not on the island on that date, you can still listen to the entire event live on the Mana’o Hana Hou Radio website,, from 2 to 5 Hawaii time. On Maui it will be broadcast on Mana’o Hana Hou Radio, 91.7 FM.
My thanks to all of you who have expressed your sorrow at his passing. He was a great man and a loving soul. The world is the poorer for his loss.
